Morning Dante Reflection

The Examples of Virtue, here with Emperor Trajan.

Canto 10, verse 1-3:

“When we had passed the threshold of the gate
forever closed to souls whose loves are bad
who make the crooked road seem like the straight”

This is from the opening of Purgatory 10 – where the “real” story begins. The word “closed” is “disusa” in the original Italian, meaning more “disused” or “obsolete, neglected”. Again this underlines the Free Will to choose – the path to Virtue and Good Life is open for everyone. But not aiming right, will make it remain hidden!
